Our journey is to go to Demre (Myra) via Kemer in the early morning.
During our journey, we take short breaks so that we can enter the world-famous rock tombs in a rested state. Then we visit the Saint Nikolaus Church and have lunch, then we take a short break.
We go to Andriake Port and take a sea voyage to the ancient city of Simena. We see the sunken city, houses and tombs there and return to our hotels in the evening.
Rock tombs, Lycian inscriptions and coins show that Myra continued its existence at least from the 5th century BC. According to the information provided by Strabon, Myra, one of the six major cities of the Lycian League, is referred to as Myrrh in Lycian inscriptions.
In the early days of Christianity, Myra was the metropolis of Lycia. St. Paul changed ships in the port on his way to Rome in 60 AD. St. Nicholas, also known today as Santa Claus, was the bishop of Myra in the 4th century. It is known that during the reign of Theodosius II, who ruled the empire between 408 and 450, St. Nicholas was the archbishop of Myra and Myra was the capital of Lycia.
Kekova: Kekova (in Lycian: Dolichiste) is a small, rocky island off the coast of Kaleköy and Üçağız near the Demre district of Antalya province. It is often referred to as "Kakava" in sources. Although it has a surface area of 4.5 km², no one lives on this island. The island, which has guesthouses and cafes, is accessible by boat. The historical sunken city, which has been submerged over time, can be visited by private boats.
